Recently signed as a songwriter to Seattle’s legendary Sub Pop, Margate-based Night Works (Metronomy & Christine and the Queens collaborator Gabriel Stebbing) is back with a dancefloor-focussed summer jam rework of his track Sweep it out your hair by Dublin-based DJ and producer Jamal Sul, AKA MovingStill.
We’re delighted that Moving Still could take time out from his hectic DJ schedule (at venues such as London’s Pickle Factory, La Bellevoiserie in Paris and Tengu in Dublin) to bring the fire to this version. Coming hot on the heels of his beautiful 6 track EP Kalam Hub( on close supporter Palms Trax’s label CWPT) and having smashed his Boiler Room set out of the
park, this rework shows just why Moving Still is in such high demand.
The original song, from Night Works’ second album Tongue & Groove, released last year via 21CC, is an Arthur Russell/Steve Reich inspired marimba paean to the poetry of afternoons in the park and losing yourself to your lover. Produced by James Greenwood (Alison Goldfrapp/Daniel Avery/Kelly Lee Owens/Confidence Man) and co-written with composer Josephine Stephenson (Daughter/Ex:Re/Radiohead), it’s a real kaleidoscopic slow-burner.
Moving Still flips the vocal and guitar samples with aplomb, fast-forwarding the action past sunset and sultry dusk, on to the heat of the dancefloor, with pulsating Italo synths and the Arabi pop nous that has become his trademark. With support for his recent releases from Palms Trax, Hunee, Skatebard, David Vunk, CC:DISCO!, Esa Williams and Nabihah Iqbal, this rework is sure to go all summer long.
